We have tornadoes in our area from time to time, and with the last one, it knocked out all our electric for days. The whole neighborhood had no electric, and some of the homes had major damage. It was quite a scene, and everything I had in the refrigerator and freezer went bad. I also had some meat stored in a separate freezer, which I had to throw out as well.
My wife suggested that we should maybe get a back up generator for when this happens again. We know it will keep happening, and we don't want our food to go to waste and for us to have to sit in the heat with no air conditioning or fan. I looked up generators online and found something called a biogas generator. I didn't know anything about it before this. It tells you how to build your own, and you can do it for pretty cheap. So I followed the directions and built my own. I built it in the basement, so if a tornado comes, it won't destroy it.
There's also plenty of ventilation down there, as they tell you not to put it in a non ventilated area, because you could suffocate. And you can't smoke or put fire anywhere near it, since it's a source of gas. The great thing about this is that you can use organic materials to make the methane gas. You can throw in your fruit peels/skins, rotten potatoes, wood, even grass clippings and leaves!
I know we have plenty of that stuff every single week, and so it's good to be able to use it without wasting garbage bags to haul away the leaves and grass. It's working great! It is a little slower than a gas generator, but that's ok, since it's only a back up for now.
It will allow us to keep our meat, keep us cool, and help out the neighbors when something happens. I'm going to tell them about it too soon.
